Gamers eager to learn more about Star Wars: Battlefront now have a date to circle: June 15. That's when developer DICE will release the first gameplay footage to the public, through publisher Electronic Arts' briefing at E3 in Los Angeles.

Battlefront Gameplay

At the Star Wars Celebration in April, DICE showed off a Battlefront gameplay demo behind closed doors. E3 next month will be the first time, provided there are no leaks, that the public gets to see the game in action.

Several days ago, the release of an unsanctioned glimpse at a loadout screenshot and an incredibly brief piece of gameplay for Star Wars Battlefront 2 began circulating online, with many poring over the two assets to determine what kind of playable materials the forthcoming sequel will have. Now, it looks like fans of the science fiction shooter franchise will have even more details to parse through, for it appears as though a leaked video of what looks to be a behind-the-scenes gameplay feature for the title has leaked online, showing off a companion droid and its abilities, as well as Emperor Palpatine's Sentinel.

Bearing this in mind, Star Wars Battlefront 2's developers need to deliver a story mode with a memorable and meaningful plot alongside engaging gameplay, and not just throw it together as an afterthought in the interest of placating fans. The game's publisher, Electronic Arts, expects to ship 14 million copies in its first five months, so let's hope that's due to the company's confidence in the potent synergy between the title's campaign and multiplayer, and not just a reliance on the popularity of the Star Wars brand.

You might say that it's staged, and you'd be right. The trailer's made of gameplay footage (captured on a PlayStation 4, curiously), but clearly arranged so grand battles go the hero gets to do heroic things without dying then edited to show the highlights of even that.

All the same: that's some pretty cool stuff, isn't it? The cow lumbering into view is great. Sure, a tank in Battlefield may be intimidating, but it doesn't tower 22.5 metres above the battlefield. Getting to play as Johnny Blackhat or his kid looks pretty fun too. Now if they can show some proper gameplay - you're being spawn-camped, half your team is AFK, someone keeps screaming over voice chat - and it still looks that flash, that'd be something.

"I really look forward to showing you all more from the game as we get closer to release, and for you guys who are asking me when you can see gameplay, I can tell you that we have great plans for E3," design director Niklas Fegraeus teased in a letter on the game's official site.

Star Wars Battlefront is set for release on November 20 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. While you patiently wait for launch day, read our impressions of the closed-door gameplay footage we saw during last month's Star Wars Celebration.

Battlefront received mixed to positive reviews from critics, who praised its gameplay, visuals, music, technical aspects and high production values, but criticized its lack of content at launch in both single and multiplayer modes, and use of a season pass model. Despite this, the game was a commercial success with more than 14 million copies sold worldwide. A sequel, Star Wars Battlefront II, was released on November 17, 2017.

In June 2014, it was revealed at EA's E3 2014 press conference that the ice planet Hoth and the forest moon of Endor would be playable maps for the game.[24] In late October of that year, it was revealed that the game would be released Christmas 2015, tying in with the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.[25] To meet the deadline, the team had to remove the game's single-player campaign mode.[26] In early March 2015, the first gameplay footage of the game was shown at a private retail event and received a standing ovation from the audience.[27] In April 2015, at Star Wars Celebration 2015 in Anaheim, California, the first gameplay details and the second trailer was released.[28] The first downloadable content of the game, entitled Battle of Jakku, was also announced during the event.[29]

In April 2015, EA announced that Battlefront would release in North America on November 17 and in Europe on November 20 of that year.[30] They also announced that the game would be released in Australia on November 18.[31] It has been stated that the release date for Europe would fall on November 19.[32] It was confirmed that the game would not feature the Battlelog system, but to use a new system developed by Uprise, an Electronic Arts subsidiary based in Sweden, which has previously worked on the Battlelog system of Battlefield 4.[33] On June 15, further gameplay was shown at E3 2015 depicting the Walker Assault mode on Hoth from perspectives of both the Rebel Alliance and the Galactic Empire using various weapons, items and vehicles such as the AT-AT walker, Snowspeeders and TIE Fighters ending with playable characters Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader engaging in battle.[34] Another gameplay trailer featuring cooperative missions was also shown at the event.[35] An open beta of the game was released for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on October 8. The beta includes the Walker Assault, Drop Zone, and Survival mission modes.[36] The beta was originally set to close on October 12 but was extended to October 13 for testing of "extreme scenarios".[37] The beta was played by more than nine and a half million players.[38] According to Electronic Arts, it was their largest beta.[39]

The game's lack of a campaign for the single-player mode was criticized.[57] Steven Storm of Ars Technica praised the visuals, stating: "DICE has at least captured the look and feel of Star Wars, perhaps better than any other game with the license before it."[58] He likened gameplay to the "standard Battlefield formula of walk, get shot, respawn, and repeat...".[58]

Star Wars Battlefront received "mixed reviews" for the PC and PlayStation 4 and positive reviews for the Xbox One, according to video game review aggregator Metacritic.[59][60][61] Mizuho Securities analyst Neil Doshi noted the negative reviews, but predicted that the game would prevail as a financial hit.[73] Mike Mahardy of GameSpot criticised the game's combat as repetitive.[64] Dan Ryckert of Giant Bomb praised the game for capturing the Star Wars feel.[69] Due to heavy criticism about the gameplay's lack of depth and approach to casual gamers, Blake Jorgensen, Electronic Arts' chief financial officer admitted that the game was intentionally designed to be accessible for those new to first-person shooter games, or children wanting to play with their parents, going against the hardcore fanbase of Star Wars: Battlefront (2004).[74]

Everyone will get their first look at gameplay footage of Star Wars Battlefront during a panel on Friday, April 17. The panel will be hosted by EA at the Star Wars Celebration, which takes place in Anaheim, CA from April 16-19.

Glad to see the ai engagement distance is on the to do list. I remember playing the old battlefronts and being able to shoot at enemies far away but they were just past the limit so they ignored it. Might do lots of good on the really open maps like hoth and geonosis. Also, if this mod increases weapon damage like I suspect it does, will you increase the reinforcement count so the battles dont end to quickly? Have you already dealt with this?

Forgive me for my English kind man!) By recoil, I meant - throwing a gun (screen), like a sniper. All classes have no throw/recoil, only sniper rifles. I would like all classes and guns to see the toss / recoil (of the screen), as in Battlefield games, it enlivens the gameplay. On Battlefront 2 (2005) there is a modification called "Tecmod" and "Project Battlefront", there is a small screen toss implemented on all blasters, I would like to see it in your mods.

In this five minutes or so of gameplay footage (captured from a PS4) we see some pretty epic fight scenes that include the likes of AT-ATs and TIE Fighters, not to mention infantry on the ground (and a brief Darth Vader cameo at the end) and the action looks to be just as explosive and intense as Star Wars fans have been hoping for.

In anticipation of Battlefront's upcoming release, publisher EA has released a new launch trailer (above) for the game. Unlike the previous trailer, this one is heavily focused on actual gameplay. Starting on the front lines, the trailer moves from ground combat to the skies, the scenes always punctuated by blaster fire. The video emphasizes the large scope of the levels, with dozens of soldiers battling across Hoth, Tatooine and Endor.

E3 is taking place this weekend and that means all of this year's biggest games are out there putting their best foot forward. That being the case, EA and DICE were on hand to present some brand new footage from Star Wars Battlefront 2. This particular trailer is focused more on the actual multiplayer gameplay, as opposed to the story mode, and it is full of prequel era action. In almost any other context, the Star Wars prequels would be a negative thing, but in this case, it is absolutely awesome.

The gameplay is absolutely intense and is probably the best use of the Star Wars prequel era characters and settings available to fans. Especially once Darth Maul shows up. We get to see the famed Sith in action, taking out squads of clone troopers with ease. The trailer then moves to some more, very intense battle shots, before bringing us to a montage of sequences that show off more planets, more heroes and an epic showdown between Darth Maul and Yoda. Star Wars Battlefront II makes the prequels look a lot better than they have in a very long time. As another added bonus, EA announced that the game will have a lot of free content, which is great for those who were annoyed by the season pass situation with the first Star Wars Battlefront. 2ff7e9595c
